Five players post double wins as Skyhawks cruise

Senior captain Lindsey Herchel won at first singles and first doubles to lead Stonehill.

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 14, 2011) – Stonehill College, currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, opened the spring schedule with a 9-0 sweep of Saint Ambrose University in a non-conference women's tennis matchup Monday morning at Lake Cane Tennis Center.

Stonehill took an early 3-0 advantage in doubles play, led by senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) with an 8-3 victory over Saint Ambrose's Adrianne Foley (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) and Heather Matejka (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) at No. 1 doubles. Junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) claimed an 8-0 win at No. 2, and junior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) wrapped up an 8-0 victory at No. 3.

Herchel faced off with Foley again at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Frost defeated Melanie Blazevic (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, posting two victories for the Skyhawks without dropping a game all day, and junior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) also notched a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Emily Turner (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) at No. 6.

Matejka took White to a 12-game second set at No. 3 singles, but White came away with the straight-sets victory, 6-3, 7-5.

Stonehill (5-0, 3-0 NE-10) will take on the U.S. Naval Academy tomorrow at the Star Island Resort in Kissimmee beginning at 1:30 p.m.
