Lincoln, Rhode Island native recognized by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education for performance on the field and in the classroom

EASTON, Massachusetts (May 18, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's soccer junior Camryn Thompson was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar second team for the second time in her career, as published in the April edition of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
Thompson, who has earned a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average and a 4.00 GPA as of the fall semester and while majoring in biology, was just one of two representatives from the Northeast-10 Conference on any of the women's soccer teams. Thompson is the first two-time honoree for the Skyhawks.
Over the COVID-19 pandemic, Thompson was able to volunteer at Franklin Farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island where she was able to plant fresh produce, harvest it, and all of the crops were donated to the Rhode Island Food Bank or other facilities. Thompson has also volunteered with Adopt-a-Family in her home state of Rhode Island since 2018 where she organizes and delivers gifts to families in need during the holidays. She also volunteers with the Maddie Potts Fitness Challenge to help promote health and fitness to people in the community by fundraising for scholarships for the Maddie Potts Foundation. With the Skyhawks, Thompson has assisted in coaching some youth teams that they welcomed to campus. At Stonehill in the biology department, the junior is a teaching assistant where she works with students to help them better understand concepts and ideas in the subject.

The Lincoln, Rhode Island native assisted the Skyhawks to its third NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and third appearance in four years in 2019. With the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the Skyhawks made history by winning their first NCAA game with a 2-1 win over Jefferson University in their first meeting. Stonehill made its 11th NE10 Tournament appearance after finishing second in the regular season standings. In Thompson's three years in the Purple & White, the Skyhawks have posted a 25-12-4 overall mark and 18-5-4 Conference record, with the 2020 season not being played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her two years with the Purple & White, Thompson has started in 32 of 40 games played, scoring 17 goals with eight assists for 42 points. She has chipped in five game-winning goals. As a freshman, Thompson matched the Stonehill freshman record for total points with 24. At the end of last season, Thompson finished third on the team with eight goals and 18 points. In the NE10, the junior finished second in game-winning goals, ninth in goals, 10th in points, and 33rd in assists.
In 2019, Thompson earned NE10 All-Conference second team and New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England first team honors, both her second selections in her career. During her freshman year, she was also named NE10 Rookie of the Year and selected to the NE10 All-Rookie team. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll with Academic Distinction, the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and the Dean's list for five semesters. In April, Thompson earned her second St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medal for having the highest GPA on the women's soccer team through the fall 2020 semester.
