Schoen Named NE10 Goaltender of the Year, Highlights Three All-Conference Selections

EASTON, Massachusetts (February 25, 2020) The Stonehill College ice hockey team earned one major award winner and three All-Conference honors as the Northeast-10 Conference announced major awards concluding regular season play on Tuesday.

Senior goaltender Matthew Schoen was voted NE10 Goaltender of the Year and selected to the first team. This is the fourth time that a Skyhawk has been named NE10 Goaltender of the Year. Classmate Cameron Wright was also selected to the first team, while freshman Brendan Nehmer was voted to the NE10 All-Rookie team.

Schoen, who has earned NE10 Goaltender of the Week three times this season, has seen career best numbers throughout the year. He averaged 2.69 goals against average during the regular season with just 55 goals against in his 21 games played. He stopped 748 pucks for a .932 save percentage and a 10-7-3 record.

The senior posted a career best 47 saves in a 3-3 tie against Saint Anselm College in mid-November, followed by his first-career shutout, a 3-0 win, over Johnson & Wales University in early January. This was the first shutout for the Skyhawks since November 27, 2018 when they defeated Post University 5-0.

In the NE10, the Tolland, Connecticut native is ranked first in save percentage, saves and minutes played, second in wins, third in goals against average, and sixth in goals against. Throughout his career, Schoen has played in 28 games, giving up 77 goals against, for a 2.94 goals against average. He has totaled 942 saves for a .924 save percentage and a 12-11-3 record.

Along with Goaltender of the Week honors, Schoen has received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2019 and 2018, as well as the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Krampade All American Scholars Program in both years. He has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll multiple semesters and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

Wright, who also earns his first major award from the NE10 has also seen career highs in multiple categories this season. His 29 points, ranks third in the NE10, while his 16 goals is tied for second and his 13 assists are tied for 16th. He is skating with a plus-11, scoring four power-play goals, two game-winning goals, as well as his first career hat trick in a 4-4 draw against Assumption College. The hat trick was the first for the Skyhawks since last season when Shamus Maloney '19 scored his first-career hat trick in a 5-1 win over Franklin Pierce University.

The senior was named NE10 Player of the Week once this season, as he has been named to the NE10 Academic and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls multiple semesters throughout his career. The West Dummerston, Vermont native was given the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award his sophomore year. He was also named NE10 Rookie of the Week four times during his freshman season. Overall, he has played in 104 games, scoring 39 goals and 45 assists for a total of 84 points with 10 power play goals, and five game winning goals.

Nehmer picks up his first major award from the NE10 as he ranks third on the team in points. As a freshman, he has totaled six goals with 15 assists for 21 points. He has scored one power play goal and is skating plus-2 on the ice.

Around the NE10, Nehmer is ranked 10th in assists, 16th in total points, and 37th in goals. He also leads the league in freshman scoring.

The East Longmeadow, Massachusetts native was named NE10 Rookie of the Week once this season.

Stonehill will travel back to South Burlington, Vermont for a 4:00 p.m. NE10 Semifinal Tournament game battling Saint Michael's College on Saturday, February 28. This will be the fourth time this season that the two teams have matched up with the record standing 1-1-1 and first time since 2017 that the Skyhawks have appeared in the NE10 Tournament.
