Rutland, Mass., native selected for second-straight week after leading Skyhawks to three wins, including triumph over 3rd-ranked UMass Lowell

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2009) - Stonehill College senior Stephanie Kott (Rutland, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) has been named the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Week for field hockey by the Conference office this afternoon.

Kott, who earns the award for the second-straight week, led a Stonehill defense which was instrumental in three wins last week. The Skyhawks allowed just two goals over the three matches, for a 0.62 team goals against average, limiting the opposition to just 5.3 shots per game. Kott also dished two assists in that time.

Stonehill opened the week with a 4-0 shutout victory at Assumption on Tuesday as the Skyhawks allowed just one shot (not on goal). The Skyhawks then claimed a key 2-1 non-conference win over No. 3 UMass Lowell on Thursday night, the River Hawks managed just five shots on goal and Kott assisted on the opening goal of the match. Stonehill limited Saint Anselm College to five shots (three on goal) in Saturday's 2-1 overtime victory, with Kott assisting on the Skyhawks equalizing goal with 3:03 left in regulation.

Kott leads a Stonehill defensive unit which ranks second among NE-10 leaders with a 1.39 team goals against average and two shutouts. She shares the team lead and is tied for fifth in the Conference so far this season with her three assists.

Kott has appeared in 69 career games over her four-year career at Stonehill, totaling six assists including her career-high matching total so far this season. She has been a key part of a defense which has recorded 23 shutouts over the last four years and is regularly among the top defensive teams in the NE-10.

Stonehill (5-2, 0-0 NE-10), ranked fourth in last week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, are winners of five-straight entering Wednesday night's matchup with Southern Connecticut State University that kicks off a three-game home stand at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks host Saint Michael's College to open their NE-10 schedule on Saturday at 1 p.m.
