Nelson nets lone goal as Skyhawks win fourth-straight

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (October 17, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, picked up its fourth-straight win and 14th in its last 15 with a 1-0 victory over LIU-C.W. Post in non-conference field hockey action at Bob Blitz Field this afternoon.

Sophomore forward Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored the lone goal of the contest for Stonehill and junior goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) made two saves (one each half) to post her fourth shutout of the season (ninth career) and make the goal stand.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Colern (Barker, N.Y./Barker) stopped six shots for C.W. Post as Stonehill finished with a 10-6 edge in shots for the afternoon to go with a 13-3 advantage on penalty corners.

Nelson's third goal of the week, ninth of the season, came with 5:41 to play in the first half when she took a pass from the right side by senior All-American Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and wrapped her shot around Colern into the back right corner of the cage. The assist for Ladino is her fifth of the season and 35th of her career, moving within one of Stonehill's career record of 36 set by Kelly Latendresse from 2003-06. Ladino also inched closer to the 100-point milestone with the 93rd of her career.  

Stonehill (14-3, 7-1 NE-10), ranked first for the third-straight week in the NCAA Division II North Regional rankings, returns to Northeast-10 play on Wednesday when it hosts Merrimack College for a key matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium on Senior Day at 4 p.m. C.W. Post (6-9, 1-6 PSAC) visits Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
