Stonehill Places Fourth at Minuteman Invitational

Dyson, Chauvin, Carrier are all top scorers for Skyhawks

AMHERST, Mass. (April 16, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked second in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional index, posted a fourth-place team finish at Saturday’s Minuteman Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Skyhawks turned in nine top-five finishes to collect 66 team points, while the team title was claimed by the host Minutemen with 190 points.

Sophomore Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading) and freshman Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) were among the Skyhawks’ top point-scorers, recording strong performances in the field events to lead Stonehill. Dyson placed second in the high jump at five feet, one inch, while Chauvin took second in the discus throw with a season-best distance of 118 feet, two inches. The pair also placed fourth and fifth in the javelin, Chauvin throwing 121’7” and Dyson just behind her at 120’9”.

Junior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) placed third in a tightly packed 400-meter dash, finishing in 1:00.72 as the top three runners were separated by less than a second. Carrier also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay as she, senior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), and freshmen Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) combined for a time of 4:14.82 to place fourth in the event.


Katie Bernazzani placed third in the 100m hurdles.

Polakowski and sophomore Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) also picked up points in the hurdles for Stonehill. Bernazzani ran to a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles in 15.88 seconds, and Polakowski took sixth in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:08.85. Sophomore Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) collected top-ten finishes in both hurdles events, taking sixth in the 100m in 16.17 seconds and seventh in the 400m edition in 1:11.05.

Junior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) led a strong Stonehill field in the 1500m run, turning in a 4:54.50 to finish eighth overall. Senior Amanda Tripodi (Darien, Conn./Darien) was the next Skyhawk across the line, placing 13th in 4:59.24, and freshman Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) was just behind her with a time of 5:00.14 for 15th place. Freshman Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) also came in with the top 20, taking 18th in 5:01.42. Sophomores Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) finished together in 23rd and 24th, Joynt in 5:07.48 and Veit in 5:09.33.

Also taking points in the field were juniors Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) and Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees). Shelkova placed fifth in both the long jump (16 feet, 4.25 inches) and the triple jump (33 feet, one inch). Insel posted two top-ten finishes, placing seventh in the javelin at 116’8” and 10th in the shot put at 32’5.5”.

Stonehill heads to Princeton University next weekend to compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational, with events beginning on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
