Bernazzani Named NE-10 Track Freshman of the Week

Norwood, Mass., native selected for first time after break school record in 55m hurdles

EASTON, Mass. (February 11, 2010) - Stonehill College newcomer Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) has been named the Northeast-10 Women's Track Freshman of the Week by the Conference office this afternoon.

It marks the third-straight week at Stonehill track athlete has earned the award as Bernazzani collects the honor after a record-setting afternoon at the Tufts Stampede on Saturday in Medford, Mass. She placed second in the 55-meter high hurdles (out of 23 competitors) with a time of 8.75-seconds in the final. She advanced to the final round with a school-record time of 8.71-seconds in the preliminaries to qualify for the New England Championships later this month. Bernazzani broke the previous record of 8.80-seconds set by Tracy Tobacco on February 22, 2003, at the Northeast-10 Championships.

Bernazzani has competed in four of Stonehill's five events in her first collegiate season. Before Saturday's record-setting run in the hurdles, she placed second at the Wheaton Invitational on January 23 with a time of 8.82-seconds in the final. She also competed in the triple jump and placed 11th with a distance of 32'5.76".

The Stonehill women are back in action on Friday when they compete at the BU Valentine's Classic at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center beginning at 1 p.m.
