Stonehill Rolls to Sweep at Assumption


Junior Michael White collected four hits over today's two wins, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. 

Skyhawks open with 7-2 win in game one, cruise to 11-5 victory in game two

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 9, 2011) – Stonehill College got back on the winning track with a commanding doubleheader sweep of Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference  baseball action at H.L. Rocheleau Field this afternoon. The Skyhawks opened with a 7-2 victory in game one, before rolling to an 11-5 win in game two.

Junior Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) led the way for Stonehill who totaled 29 hits over the two games as he hit a combined 4-for-7 with four runs scored and two RBI, extending his team best hitting streak to 19 games. Sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) was 4-for-8 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI, while senior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished just a single shy of hitting for the combined cycle over the twinbill, hitting 4-for-9 with two doubles, a triple, home run and three RBI with three runs scored.

Senior Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name) led Assumption, going 4-for-9 with two home runs, a stolen base and four RBI.

Stonehill 7, Assumption 2

Stonehill scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break open a 7-2 victory over Assumption in game one.

Senior righthander Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) picked up his fourth win (4-1) of the season with a complete game effort for Stonehill, allowing two earned runs on six hits with ten strikeouts and no walks over his nine innings.

Michael White hit 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Angelo Bruno batted 2-for-5 with a double, triple, RBI and run scored. Junior Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) chipped in by going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Michael Zeiner and senior Nick Nardacci (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) both hit 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored,

Senior Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) led Assumption as he went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, while junior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) hit 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) batted 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.


Senior Bryan Galligan notched his fourth win of the season with a complete game effort in game one. 

Senior righthander Joe Green (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) took the loss (3-2) for Assumption, yielding seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts and no walks over 8.2 innings.

Stonehill struck first with single runs in the first and second. White reached on an error with two out in the first that extended the inning for Bruno who lashed an RBI triple to left center. Shepard tripled with one out in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Zeiner.

Assumption knotted the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run triple to left by Quinn. Stonehill regained the lead in the sixth when Shepard singled with one out and scored on a ground out by sophomore James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff). Nardacci followed with an RBI single to left.

Stonehill broke the game open with a three-run ninth. White collected an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball, while junior Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) chipped in an RBI single.

Stonehill opened a 6-1 lead in the fifth and banged out 17 hits to fuel an 11-5 victory over Assumption in game two.

Six Stonehill batters had multiple hits, led by Michael Zeiner who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Angelo Bruno went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Rich McHugh was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Freshman Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) batted 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Senior Alex McCormick (Weymouth, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) earned the win (3-2) on the mound for Stonehill, allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk over six innings.

Wally Derosier led Assumption, hitting 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Sophomore Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior righthander Zach Jacques (Jefferson, Mass./St. John's) took the loss (1-3), allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with a strikeout and a walk over two innings.

Stonehill jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, starting with three in the top of the first. Nick Nardacci led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Bruno. Senior Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) singled and scored on a ground out and White, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a passed ball.

Zeiner led off the second with a double and scored on an infield single by James DeAlto. White drove in Karalis, who singled, with a sac fly to center. Assumption got on the scoreboard with a run in the home half of the second on an RBI single from Keddy.

The teams traded runs in the fifth before Stonehill broke the game open with a five run sixth. The Skyhawks loaded the bases on an error, single and intentional walk before McHugh delivered a two run single to left. Zeiner followed with a two run double and then scored on a double from Karalis with two out, for an 11-2 lead.

Stonehill (22-8, 7-3 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Lowell, ranked fourth in the NCBWA East Region poll, at Lou Gorman Field at 1 p.m. Assumption (6-18, 3-7 NE-10) visits Pace University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
