BROOKLYN, N.Y. (November 11, 2022)- With just two games left on the season, the Stonehill College women's volleyball team took on Long Island University but fell, 3-0 (11-25, 20-25, 17-25) Friday afternoon at the Long Island Wellness Recreation and Athletic Center.

For the seventh time this season, Mia Berardino led the Skyhawks with eight kills and it marked the seventh time in her last eight matches with five or more kills. Not far behind her was Leah Michalowski who posted a career-high five kills Friday afternoon. Molly Turner guided the offense with 15 assists and it is her eighth-straight match with 15 or more helpers. Defensively, Kristen DeLorenzo once again led the squad with 12 digs, and Berardino and Michalowski each notched two block assists.

Long Island's offense was off and running early as the Sharks jumped out to a quick 7-1 advantage. However, Stonehill stormed back and cut the deficit to two (8-6) thanks to a 5-1 rally thanks to five-straight Long Island errors. The Sharks went up four but thanks to a Delaney Mihelich kill, the Purple and White were within three (10-7). Despite the late push, Long Island pulled away with a 15-4 burst and took the opening set, 25-11. In the first set, Michalowski led the offense with two kills.

In the second set, Stonehill's offense had a better start as the Purple and White grabbed an early three-point lead (7-4) thanks to two service aces and a kill from Berardino. Long Island pushed back and evened the set at eight and then found themselves up 10-9 but Berardino had yet another kill and tied things at 10. The Sharks gave themselves some breathing room as they went on a 6-1 run which made it 16-11 but Stonehill pushed back and was down three thanks to a Long Island error and Jentry Allen kill. As Long Island grabbed their largest lead of the match (21-16), Stonehill once again chipped away at the deficit and was down three (22-19) thanks to a 3-1 run spearheaded by a kill from Michalowski and another Berardino service ace. However, the Sharks held off the Skyhawks and went up 2-0 after they took set two, 25-20.

Stonehill once again jumped out to an early lead in the final set as the squad went up 5-3 early on courtesy of five different Skyhawks notching a kill. Long Island would tie the match at five but a Berardino kill put Stonehill back up by one. The Sharks recaptured the lead and went up 10-6 but Berardino helped Stonehill hang around as the Purple and White's deficit was now three. However, the Sharks utilized a 7-0 run (17-7) that ultimately put the match out of reach. Stonehill would get as close as seven in the final set (21-14) but unfortunately, it was not enough as the Sharks earned the sweep by the score of 25-17.
