Women's Volleyball Falls to St. John's University In Final Day Of Kaiser Classic, 3-0

QUEENS, N.Y. (September 10, 2022)- The Stonehill College women's volleyball team wrapped up their final day at the Kaiser Classic when they took on host, St. John's University but ended up falling, 3-0 (6-25, 23-25, 11-25) Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.

The Details

Lauren McCloskey and Kaitlyn Watson led the Skyhawks with six kills each on Saturday and Mia Berardino and Kristen Joyce each finished with two kills. For the second straight match, McCloskey finished with six kills and has posted five or more kills in three matches this year. Watson's six kills tied her career-high and she also has finsihed with five or more kills in three contests. Both Molly Turner and Delaney Mihelich had another solid outing finishing with eight and seven assists respectively. For Turner, she has now dished out five or more assists in each match this year and for Mihelich, it is her eighth straight contest with five or more assists. Defensively, McCloskey recorded one block and she has now finished with at least one block in three matches this season.

In set one, the Skyhawks got out to an early 3-2 after an Emma Graves kill and two St. John's attack errors. However, from that point, the Red Storm took over on a 9-1 run and recaptured the lead, 11-4. Stonehill cut the deficit in half (12-6) after Berardino notched a kill. Despite pulling within six, St. John's closed set one on a 13-0 push. For Stonehill, Jentry Allen, Berardino, and Graves all recorded a kill in the set. 

The Red Storm jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead but despite the large lead, the Skyhawks trimmed the St. John's advantage to two (8-6) thanks to a 4-1 rally highlighted by two Watson kills. St. John's would keep things at two after a service ace that made it 15-13, but the purple and white cut it to one (15-14) after capitailizing on a Red Storm attack error. Stonehill continued to hang around throughout the set finding themselves down one three more times including late when it was 24-23 after a Kristen Joyce kill. Unfortunately, St. John's held off the Skyhawks momentum to take set two, 25-23. 

St. John's strong offense continued where they left off in the final set jumping out to a 15-3 lead. The Skyhawks cut it to 16-6 after kills from Lindsey Peirson and Joyce. The Red Storm would not let Stonehill get closer than that as St. John's utilzied a 9-5 push to secure the match sweep. In set three, Kristen DeLorenzo and Turner each had a service ace and McCloskey led the squad with two kills.

Stonehill concludes their nine match roadtrip when they travel to Saint Anselem College on Friday, September 16 for a 6 p.m. matchup.
