Candelaria and Malmlov lead Chargers in tight three-set win

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 31, 2009) - The University of New Haven remained perfect in Conference play with a 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19) victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 volleyball action at Charger Gymnasium today.

Junior Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden) and freshman Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) led New Haven to its ninth-straight win with 11 kills each. Candelaria notched a double-double as she added 13 digs and three service aces, while Malmlov also posted two block assists. Freshman setter Tia Inong (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/Pearl City) registered 34 assists, while sophomore Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland) chipped in with 11 digs and two aces.

Sophomore Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) led Stonehill with a double-double effort of 12 kills and 12 digs. Junior Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, while classmate Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) dished out 32 assists and added three block assists. Junior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) contributed 11 digs and two aces.


Junior Erin Johnson also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Stonehill led the first set 19-18 after kills from Johnson and senior Kristen Hordern (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case). New Haven answered by taking the next six points with the benefit of just one kill and an ace as the Skyhawks had four errors to contribute to the run. Junior Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) posted back-to-back kills, but the Chargers closed the set out with a kill from freshman Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies).

The second set featured 19 ties and seven lead changes before New Haven was able to pick up the win. Stonehill had set point at 25-24 after back-to-back kills from Johnson, but the Chargers answered again. Tied at 27-27, Malmlov and Inong closed out the set for a 2-0 match lead.

Stonehill held another late lead in the third set (19-18) after a Huselton kill. New Haven responded again with the final seven points to close out the match. Candelaria notched three of those points with service aces.

Stonehill (14-10, 8-5 NE-10) is back in action next Saturday when it visits The College of Saint Rose at 1 p.m. New Haven (22-4, 13-0 NE-10) travels to Saint Anselm College next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
