Junior setter Andrea Wirth engineered both Skyhawk wins today with 46 and 30 assists, respectively. She notched a double-double in the NE-10 win over Southern New Hampshire.

Skyhawks notch five-set win over NYIT, sweep Southern N.H. for NE-10 victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 24, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Division II East Regional poll, picked up a pair of victories at a tri-match hosted by Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon. The Skyhawks opened with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12) victory over New York Institute of Technology before claiming a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 26-24) NE-10 decision over the host Penmen at SNHU Fieldhouse.

Junior setter Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) dished out 46 assists to go with 13 digs and a service ace to lead Stonehill. Classmate Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) posted 16 kills and just three hitting errors on 35 total attacks for a .371 hitting percentage and three blocks. Junior Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) added 15 kills with three errors on 38 attacks for a .316 percentage with three block assists, while sophomore Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) notched a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs with two block assists. Junior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) chipped in with 28 digs and two service aces.

Sophomore Emily Syers (East Meadow, N.Y.) led NYIT with 48 assists, nine digs and two aces. Classmate Tugce Sirdas (Istanbul, Turkey) collected 15 kills, while sophomore Lisa Peacock (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) contributed a match-high 30 digs and four aces.

The fifth set was knotted at 10-10 when Johnson posted a pair of kills to provide a two-point cushion. A Noonan kill and NYIT hitting error put Stonehill on match point (14-11). Tugce pulled the Bears within two (14-12), but sophomore Michelle Thornhill (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) closed out the win with a kill.

Sophomore Laura Huselton posted double-doubles in both wins for Stonehill.

Wirth posted a double-double for Stonehill with 30 assists and 13 digs while serving up four aces. Huselton also contributed a double-double with a match-high 11 kills and 14 digs to go with three aces, while Johnson chipped in with eight kills. Thompson and freshman Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) each contributed ten digs, while Kelly also chipped in three aces.

Freshman Caitlin Wilson (Milton, N.H./Nute) led Southern New Hampshire with 17 digs. Junior Stephanie Dluginski (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) posted nine kills and five digs, while sophomore Danielle Coffey (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) chipped in seven kills.

Stonehill served up 12 service aces in the three set win. The Skyhawks cruised through the first two sets, but were forced to rally from a 22-15 deficit in the third to close out the match. Wirth started the rally with two-straight aces. In fact, Wirth was on serve for seven-straight points on an 8-0 run that knotted the score at 23-23. Huselton knotted the score at 24-24 with a kill and then closed the match out with an ace after a Johnson kill.

 Stonehill (14-7, 8-3 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Merrimack College for a non-conference battle at Merkert Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
