Oakes Wins Long Jump on Day One of NEC Indoor Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (February 18, 2024) – Freshman Kayla Oakes (Kingston, N.Y.) won the long jump Sunday afternoon as the women's track and field team competed on day one of the Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Sports Complex.

The women's long jump, pole vault, shot put, and 3000m race went final Sunday while the other events held preliminary qualifying races. Overall, the Skyhawks sit in third place with 19 points after day one while Sacred Heart currently sits atop the standings with 41 points.

FIELD EVENTS

  • Oakes' personal best mark of 5.73m (18' 9.5") secured the top spot in the long jump, giving the Skyhawks 10 points toward their overall team score. Oakes is the first individual winner for the Skyhawks at NEC Indoor Championships in Stonehill's two years in the conference.
  • Senior Abigail Larsson (Bayport, N.Y.) finished in sixth place in the pole vault finals, earning three points to the Stonehill team score with her mark of 3.30m (10' 10").
  • Sophomore Darla Jagrosse (Wallingford, Conn.) had her second-best throw of the season in the shot put finals, reaching 11.79m (38' 8.25") to place 10th overall.

TRACK EVENTS (PRELIMINARY)

  • In the first event of championship weekend, junior Madison Rousseau (Canton, Mass.) placed second in her heat and fourth overall to qualify for tomorrow's 60m hurdle final, crossing the finish line in 8.99 seconds.
  • Sophomore Jordan Malloy (Colchester, Conn) had the top time of the day in the 1-mile race, qualifying for tomorrow's final with her time of 5:11.04.
  • In the lone track event that was a final on Sunday, Malloy placed third in the 3000m race as she finished in 9:51.76 to earn the Skyhawks six points toward their team score and set a new personal record.
  • Also qualifying for tomorrow's 1-mile race final was sophomore Emily Young (Newton, Mass.) who placed eighth with a new personal best time of 5:13.27.
  • Senior Kaytlin Encarnacao (Reading, Mass.) placed third overall in the 400m dash with a time of 58.77, qualifying for tomorrow's final.
  • Encarnacao also qualified for tomorrow's 200m dash final after placing seventh with a new personal record of 25.73 seconds.
  • Despite not qualifying for tomorrow's 400m final by less than a second, freshman Katie Gibbons (Pembroke, Mass.) placed 10th overall and set a new personal best, crossing the finish line in 1:00.45.
  • Freshman Madison Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) had the time to beat in the 500m dash on Sunday, finishing in 1:17.99 and qualifying for Monday's final.
  • Sophomore Grace Tyrrell (Cavendish, Vt.) will be joining Stott in the 500m final tomorrow, placing third today with a new personal best time of 1:19.77.
  • Junior Emma Lawrence (Milford, Mass.) finished the 800m qualifying run in 2:17.86, finishing in first place while securing a spot in tomorrow's final.
  • Competing in her first indoor championship event was freshman Anna Casey (Medford, Mass.), recording a new personal record in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.57, good for a 12th-place finish.
