Two Titles and Three New England Qualifiers Lead Women's Track & Field at Holy Cross Invitational

Knox qualifies for New England's the 5000-meter race


Along with her second individual title of the season, Tobin qualified for New England's with her time in the 100-meter dash

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 21, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team finished third out of six teams at the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday with 101.50 points at the Hart Turf Field and Hart Track, hosted by the College of Holy Cross.

Junior Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) earned her first individual title of the season with a mark of five feet, 3.75 in the high jump. Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston), and Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) both recorded a five feet, 1.75-inch jump taking third and fourth, respectively.

Senior Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) took her second-straight title of the season in the pole vault, hitting a height of 11 feet, 11.75 inches. Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial) and Alexandra Sexton (Los Gatos, California/Los Gatos) placed fifth and sixth with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches, respectively.

Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/Union 32) took home second in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints, as she clocked in at 12.04 and 25.01, respectively. Dexter's time in the 100-meter dash matched her previous school record, which was set in 2017 at the Minutemen Invitational.

Seniors Tobin, Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers), and junior Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) were the only other Skyhawks to come in the top-10 in the 100-meter run. Tobin finished in 12.38, good for seventh, while Polvere followed in 12.48 and Fernandes clocked in at 12.55, good for 10th. Polvere and Tobin's times were quick enough to qualify them for New England's.

Fernandes and Polvere also ran in the 200-meter sprint, taking ninth and 10th, respectively, as the junior finished in 25.64 and Polvere clocked in a time of 25.87.

Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 48.05. The quartet was made up of Sinead O'Brien (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood), Polvere, Tobin, and Dexter.

Tobin also competed in the long jump, placing fifth with a distance of 17 feet, 9 inches, earning Stonehill's top mark of the day.

Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 1 inch, while Ward took eighth with a jump of 34 feet, 8.50 inches.

Senior Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) took home the top mark for the Skyhawks in the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 2 inches, good for fifth place, while junior Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) finished 11th with a measurement of 34 feet, 4.75 inches.

In the discus, sophomore Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) finished fifth with a distance of 121 feet, 1 inch, while classmate Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) was the next Skyhawk with a mark of 117 feet, 9 inches, good for eighth. Litwa was the only Stonehill competitor to place in the top 10 of the hammer throw with a toss of 135 feet, 8 inches, earning 10th.


Polvere qualified for New England's in her first event, the 100-meter sprint

Three of the seven Skyhawk competitors finishing in the top 10 of the 800-meter run, as sophomore Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine) took the top Stonehill mark with third place and a time of 2:18.11. Junior Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) finished sixth with a time of 2:18.56 and Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) followed in seventh crossing the finish line in 2:18.61.

Juniors Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) and Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) placed in the top 10 of the 1500-meter run, as Caiazzi took home the runner-up mark and a time of 4:43.31. Cyr finished eighth with a time of 4:55.18.

Senior Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) also took home the runner-up title, but in the 5000-meter run finishing in 17:47.71. With this time, Knox qualified for New England's in her first event of the outdoor season. Freshman Samantha Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) and senior Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with Curtin clocking in a time of 18:45.83 and Hersom a time of 18:47.71.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Smith and Casey Gannon (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) crossed the line sixth with a time of 15.04 and seventh in 15.18, respectively.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Gannon, Colarusso, Fernandes, and Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) placed fifth out of eight teams clocked in a time of 4:03.35.

Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 11:54.23.

Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28 at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Massachusetts with a start time of 10:30 a.m.
