Women’s Track & Field Places Seventh At New England Championships

Skyhawks earn highest finish in program history behind two event wins

BOSTON, Mass. (February 27, 2016) – The Northeast-10 Champion Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked first in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Regional Computer Rankings, turned in a seventh-place finish this weekend at the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.

Stonehill earned its program-best finish with a total of 32 points over the course of the two day event. The Skyhawks posted four All-New England performances, including two event wins. Northeastern University claimed first place with 157 points, while the University of Rhode Island placed second with 82.75 points. UMass Amherst finished third to round out the top three, recording 71.75 points. Stonehill recorded the second-most points among Division II programs, behind only NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut State University. Yesterday, Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay won its second New England Championship, posting the second fastest time in the nation with a school-record time of 11:36.79.

Stonehill earned ten points with the DMR win, while also collecting ten points from junior Nicole Borofski's (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) first place finish in the 3000-meter run. It was Borofski's second career All-New England performance, as she placed second in the event a year ago. Junior Aisha McAdams (North Kingston, Rhode Island/North Kingston) just missed out on claiming All-New England honors as she placed ninth with a time of 10:01.73.

Stonehill's 4x800 meter relay team registered an All-New England effort with their second-place finish, adding eight points towards the team score. The team of senior Erin Carberry (Milton, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy), freshman Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan), classmate Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) and junior Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) recorded a time of 9:10.44.

Carberry led off the 4x800 with a 2:17.5 split in the opening leg, before giving way to Hannon, who turned in a time of 2:16.3, followed by Caiazzi in 2:19.6, and Buonfiglio ran the anchor leg in 2:16.8.

Freshman Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) posted an All-New England performance in the high jump, placing fifth with a height of 5-feet, 5.25-inches, earning Stonehill four points. Classmate Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/U-32) just missed making the finals of the 60-meter dash by .01 seconds, finishing ninth with a time of 7.88 seconds.  

Senior Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) placed 12th in the shot put with a distance of 39-feet, 9.25-inches, while sophomore Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) finished 16th with a distance of 39-feet, 7.25-inches.

Buonfiglio ran to a 13th place finish in the one mile run with a time of 5:04.20, while Caiazzi recorded a personal best time of 5:09.87, good for 20th place.

Stonehill will be off next weekend, before capping its indoor season on March 11-12 when its qualified individuals will compete at the NCAA DII Track & Field Championships, held at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.
