Women's Soccer Comes Up Short in Conference Opener at LIU

Fitzgerald dished out her first career assist on Casos' goal in the first half.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (September 14, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 decision in its Northeast Conference season opener against LIU this afternoon. 

Highlights 

  • Senior goalkeeper Mia Jackson recorded nine saves in going the full 90 minutes in goal for the Skyhawks.  

  • Sophomore Izzy Stein scored her first career goal for the Sharks while first-year student Stephanie Schubert recorded her team-leading second goal of the season. 

  • Junior Gina Proviano dished out her second assist of the year on Schubert's goal in the second half for LIU. 

  • First-year netminder Keely Thomas finished with two saves in her seventh start of the season in goal for the Sharks. 

How it Happened 

  • Throughout the opening 20 minutes of the game, both sides would go back and forth, playing throughout the middle third of the pitch.   

  • Senior captain Yara Fawaz nearly gave the Skyhawks the first lead of the contest in the 22nd minute with a shot rolling just wide left of the LIU net.   

  • Stonehill would light up the scoreboard five minutes later, however, after Caso capitalized on a perfect through ball from Fitzgerald in the 27th minute, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

    Coming out into the second half of action, Jackson would be put to work early in the net, making a jumping save just 30 seconds in and a diving grab off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 54th minute to keep the Sharks off the board.   

  • However, LIU would tie the game up at one apiece in the 67th minute after Stein netted her first career goal.   

  • The Sharks eventually gained their first lead of the contest in the 82nd minute when Proviano crossed a shot into the center of the box for Schubert, who would score what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
