Black Bears pull away in second half, behind two goal outings by Kraemer and Rovers

EASTON, Mass. (August 27, 2023) – The University of Maine pulled away in the second half to secure a 5-1 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference women's soccer matchup at Skyhawk Field today.

Highlights

  • Junior Abby Kraemer and sophomore Gillian Rovers each netted a pair of goals, while senior Kayla Kraemer added another top lead Maine to the win.
  • Postgrad Kira Kutzinski made four saves in the Maine goal to preserve the Black Bears third-straight win to open the season.
  • Junior Karleigh Schultz scored the first goal of the season for Stonehill, marking her third career goal, in the second half.
  • Senior Mia Jackson finished with four saves in her second start of the season in goal for Stonehill.

How it Happened

  • Maine broke through for the opening goal with under ten minutes to play in the first half as Rovers slid a right footed shot off a through ball from Pinette into the left side of the goal.
  • Maine opened the game up in the second half, with Abby Kraemer striking twice in the first seven minutes. Her first came on a header in the center of the penalty area off a corner on the left side by sophomore Julie Lossius in the 50th minute, before giving the Black Bears a three-goal lead with her third goal of the season off a pass from freshman Luise Reinwald in the 52nd.
  • Rovers completed her brace in the 63rd minute when she knocked in a cross from the right side by senior Tegan Morrison for her second career goal.
  • Kayla Kraemer joined her younger sister on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute when she headed in a serve from the right flank by postgrad Doireann Fahey at the far post for her second goal of the year.

    Stonehill got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute with Schultz netting her third career goal when she pounced on a Maine turnover in the center of the penalty area and one-timed a shot into the left side of the goal with her left foot.

  • This afternoon marked Stonehill's 2023 home opener.
  • Schultz has scored single goals over each of her three seasons at Stonehill.
  • Jackson made her seventh career start in the Stonehill goal.
