River Hawks erase early deficit, net two second half goals for win

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2009) - The University of Massachusetts Lowell, ranked eighth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II East regional poll, erased an early one goal deficit and scored two second half goals to claim a 3-1 victory over 9th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field today.

Junior Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) recorded a goal and assist for UMass Lowell, while freshmen Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) and Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) each netted goals as well.

Sophomore Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) scored the lone goal for Stonehill.

Senior goalkeeper Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, Mass./Billerica) made six saves in goal for the River Hawks (four in the second half) to preserve the victory. Sophomore Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) made a season-high nine saves in goal for Stonehill as UML posted a 16-10 advantage in shots for the match, including an 8-3 margin in the first half.

Stonehill took an early lead when Mahoney pounced on a flick from junior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and slotted her shot past Gillis for her first goal of the season 12:52 into the contest. UMass Lowell equalized less than ten minutes before halftime when Bozzella headed in a corner kick from senior Jenna McIntosh (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) in the 37th minute for her third marker of the year.

UMass Lowell clinched the win with two second half tallies. Hartmann gave the River Hawks the lead in the 68th minute when she scored off a feed by sophomore Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass./Bishop Fenwick). Costa's first collegiate goal sealed victory for the River Hawks with just 1:57 left in regulation when she knocked in a cross at the left post from Bozzella.

Stonehill (3-1-0, 1-1-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits No. 3 nationally-ranked College of Saint Rose for an NE-10 matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, September 19, to host Adelphi University at 11 a.m. UMass Lowell (2-2-0, 2-1-0 NE-10) is on the road Saturday for a match at the University of New Haven at 1 p.m.
