Stonehill Set to Play 4Kay on Saturday vs. St. Michael’s

All proceeds to benefit Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund
Free admission for fans wearing pink

EASTON, Mass. (February 7, 2012) – Stonehill College will host its annual Play 4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone, event this Saturday, February 11, during its Northeast-10 Conference basketball doubleheader with Saint Michael's College in Merkert Gymnasium. The women's game tips off at 1:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 3:30 p.m.

Stonehill is one of nearly 2,000 schools and organizations committed to participating in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Play 4Kay initiative this month. Play 4Kay is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official dates for the 2012 event is February 10-20. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the WBCA and The V Foundation. Since the initiative's inception in 2007, Play 4Kay has raised nearly $1.7-million for breast cancer awareness and research.

On Saturday, Stonehill will accept donations to the Kay Yow Cancer fund and fans wearing pink to the games will be admitted free of charge. Stonehill's women's basketball team will be wearing pink shoe laces and warm-ups and there will be a halftime game of "Knockout" for Stonehill students to win a $200 gift card. Fans can also make donations thought the women's basketball team donation page at www.play4kay.org. The fund is named after the late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, who passed away after her courageous 22-year battle with breast cancer.

The Stonehill women's basketball team (11-10, 7-10 NE-10) currently sits in ninth place in the NE-10 standings heading into tomorrow night's key matchup at the University of Massachusetts Lowell who is a game behind in a tie for 11th. The top ten teams in the standings will earn a spot in the NE-10 Tournament later this month. Saint Michael's (10-11, 7-10 NE-10) is currently tied with the Skyhawks in ninth entering tomorrow night's clash with first place Bentley University, setting up a key week of games for Stonehill.

The Stonehill men's basketball team (14-7, 11-6 NE-10), among teams receiving votes in last week's NABC Division II poll, is tied for fourth in the NE-10 standings with rival Bentley University heading into tomorrow night's big matchup with UMass Lowell, who is a game ahead in a tie for second. Saint Michael's (7-14, 6-11 NE-10), coached by former Skyhawks assistant coach Michael Harding, is currently 14th in the NE-10 standings, two games out of a playoff spot.

Admission for Stonehill basketball games is $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for senior citizens and students with ID. Stonehill students are admitted free of charge with their "Hill Card."
