Stonehill Slugs Its Way Past Saint Anselm In DH Sweep

EASTON, Mass. (April 18, 2012) – The Stonehill College softball team rallied from a four-run deficit in game one and pounded out 11 hits in game two to complete its Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) sweep over Saint Anselm College, 8-7 and 9-0 (five innings), on Wednesday evening at Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Field.

Senior Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) earned the win in relief on five-and-two-thirds innings, three hits, one run (earned), no walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) was handed the no-decision in one-and-one-thirds innings of work, seven hits, six runs (all earned), no walks and one punchout.

Freshman Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) suffered the loss recording one out, yielding two hits and one run (unearned). Junior starter Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) landed the no-decision on five-and-one-thirds innings, 11 hits, seven runs (six earned), one walk and one strikeout.

Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, junior left fielder Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) belted her second-career home run to left field sparking the Skyhawks five-run rally. McKillop pushed the score to 7-5 with a ringing RBI single down the left field line, junior catcher Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) cut the deficit to 7-6 with a run-producing single up the middle and junior first baseman Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) tied the game up with a RBI single to left field. Wilcox eventually came around to score from third base on a fielding error by the Hawks shortstop.

Reardon set down Saint Anselm in order in the top of the seventh inducing a pair of flyouts to right field and a pop up to shortstop Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) to secure the win.

Junior catcher Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) paced the Hawks offense with a two-run blast to left field in the first inning and another two-run shot in the second.

Eisenmann, Stryker and Wilcox all collected multi-hit games for the Skyhawks as they compiled 13 total as a team. Eisenmann went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, Stryker was 2-for-4 with one run scored and Wilcox had a 3-for-4 showing at the plate with two runs driven in and two runs scored.

Stonehill 9, Saint Anselm 0 (Five Innings)

Senior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) shutdown the Hawks in game two with a complete-game, three hit effort. Krantz issued just one walk and a struck out a game-high 11 batters inching closer to the single-season strikeout record of 107 set by Deb Payne (1990). Krantz currently has 99 strikeouts on the season.

Freshman Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine/Mattanawcook Academy) suffered the loss in four innings of work, allowing 11 hits, nine runs (all earned), one walk and six punchouts.

Stonehill claimed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Remick delivered a RBI single to centerfield and sophomore second baseman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) crushed a three-run dinger to deep centerfield, her first-career homer.

In the third inning, the Skyhawks used six hits to score five runs and put the game away. McKillop had a RBI double to centerfield, Eisenmann plated a run with a single through the right side of the infield, Swider ripped a two-run single up the middle and Stryker stole home on a broken run-down between first and second base.

Krantz allowed just one hit in the top of the fifth inning, an infield single by Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass./Medford), before wrapping up her tenth complete-game this season in 14 appearances.

Swider finished the contest going 2-for-2 with one run scored and five RBI's to guide the offense.

Stonehill (22-12, 15-11 NE-10), who remains undefeated at home this season (6-0), plays host to the University of New Haven Chargers tomorrow in a NE-10 doubleheader with game one scheduled for 3 p.m. Tomorrow's game was rescheduled from Saturday, April 21 due to the possibility of inclement weather. Saint Anselm (17-25, 11-15 NE-10 welcomes Adelphi University to its campus on Saturday, April 21 for a NE-10 twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
