Men's Soccer Falls to FDU, 5-1, in Season Finale

EASTON, Mass. (October 29, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team fell to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), 5-1, Sunday afternoon. Prior to kickoff, the Skyhawks honored their eight seniors: Ryan Coutu, Carlos Dias Neto, Chris Sederquist, Jacob Woznicki, Shon Ryan, Ekrem Hadzic, Zach Davis, and Finbar O'Connor. Stonehill College athletics would like to thank our seniors for all their efforts for the Stonehill men's soccer program over their careers!

Highlights

  • Woznicki scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season off Ryan's team-leading fourth assist of the year.
  • Woznicki ends the season ranking second overall in both goals (9) and points (22) in the NEC.
  • Freshman netminder Kyle Tencza made his fifth consecutive start in goal for the Skyhawks where he posted four saves on the afternoon.
  • First-year student Mario Ibeas and senior Tony Gomez scored a pair of goals apiece, while senior Jayd Hamdaoua netted a goal and dished out two assists for the Knights.
  • Postgrad goalkeeper Spencer King got the start in net for FDU and earned his seventh win of the season after registering seven saves against Stonehill.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill wasted little time getting the scoring started, as in the fifth minute of the contest Ryan bent a corner kick into the FDU box where Woznicki leapt high and headed a shot into the back of the net for the games opening score.
  • However, the Knights would respond at the 16:35 mark of the opening half where Ibeas cashed in on his first goal of the game on an assist from graduate student Edoardo Calzola.
  • After coming out of the halftime break tied up at one aside, FDU would apply the offensive pressure early, as Gomez scored what would prove to be the game winning goal in the 51st minute of the contest.
  • Less than 10 minutes later the Knights would double their advantage on the scoreboard as both Gomez and Ibeas netted their second goals of the match, respectively.
  • FDU would round out the scoring at the 74:00-minute mark after Hamdaoua rocketed a shot from just outside the 18-yard box for his sixth goal of the season and fourth point of the day, sealing the 5-1 victory over Stonehill.
