Men's Soccer Battles CCSU to 0-0 Draw

EASTON, Mass. (October 26, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team battled Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) to a 0-0 draw at Skyhawk Field Thursday afternoon.

Highlights

  • Thursday's, 0-0, draw marked the second straight scoreless meeting between Stonehill and CCSU.
  • Senior captain Jacob Woznicki and freshman Martin Johnsen each recorded a shot on goal for Stonehill.
  • Freshman netminder Kyle Tencza made his fourth consecutive start in goal for the Skyhawks and earned his first career shutout after recording five saves against the Blue Devils.
  • Tencza has now posted five saves or more in three of his first four career outings in net.
  • Junior forward Birk Martinsen led the match with two shots on goal throughout the match for CCSU.
  • Senior goalkeeper Daniel Wilmore got the start in net for the Blue Devils and earned his second clean sheet of the season after stopping both shots on goal from the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill wasted little time applying offensive pressure as less than two minutes into the contest, freshman Jaxson Kahawai would rocket a shot just high of the CCSU net.
  • Throughout the remainder of the opening half, both sides went back and forth, spending time in each other's offensive zones, as the Skyhawks would outshoot the Blue Devils 7-5 through the opening 45 minutes.
  • In the 60th minute, Woznicki provided the Skyhawks their best scoring opportunity after rising for a bicycle kick and sending a shot on the net that Wilmore would save in goal for CCSU.
  • With the game still scoreless at the 84:11 mark of the match, the Blue Devils earned a penalty kick attempt after a handball was called within the Stonehill defensive zone.
  • However, Austin Rocke's attempt would ring off the crossbar and stay out of the net, keeping the game scoreless heading into the waning minutes of the conference matchup.
  • Despite the late effort to score the game's lone goal by both sides, the contest would end in a 0-0 draw.
