EASTON, Mass. (September 1, 2023) – Senior captain Jacob Woznicki and sophomore forward Shane Fonseca each scored their first goals of the season as Stonehill College tied the Canisius University Golden Griffins, 2-2, in a non-conference matchup at Skyhawk Field this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Woznicki scored the first goal of the contest, marking his first on the young campaign.
  • Senior netminder Ryan Coutu finished with two saves in going the full 90 minutes in goal for Stonehill.
  • Senior captain Shon Ryan and Fonseca connected in the second half for Fonseca's first goal of the season.
  • Junior Ely Sidibe and first year Mason Petrucci each found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins.
  • Junior Jack Petrie finished with eight saves in the Canisius goal.

How it Happened

  • Woznicki opened the scoring at the 15:58 mark of the first half with an unassisted strike for his first goal of the season.
  • Canisius would respond in the exactly 17 minutes later with an unassisted goal off the foot of Petrucci to tie the game up at one apiece heading into the break.
  • Coming out for second half action, Stonehill would put up a flurry of shots on the Golden Griffin netminder, however, Sidibe broke away in the 55th minute to put Canisius on top, 2-1.
  • After nearly tying the game up with free kicks just outside the box, Stonehill would come up with the equalizer in the 82nd minute of the contest.

    Fonseca headed a Ryan corner kick just past the reach of Petrie to tie the game up at two apiece in the waning minutes of the match.
  • Despite Ryan blasting a shot on net in the final second of the match, the game would end knotted up at 2-2.
