LOWELL, Mass. (April 10, 2024) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to UMass Lowell in a closely contested pitcher's duel Wednesday afternoon, 2-1, at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Massachusetts. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 8-17 overall, while the River Hawks improve to 12-18 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Evan Dieter finished a homerun away from the cycle after going 3-for-3 at the dish with a double and triple.
  • Freshman Aidan Sengenberger drove home the lone run for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Jordan Marot started his first game on the mound this season and allowed one run over 5.0 inning to go along with two punch outs.
  • Junior Alex Luccini recorded his team-leading seventh homerun of the season.
  • Graduate student Trey Brown drove home the game-winning run for UMass Lowell in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Graduate student Frankie Venezia (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the River Hawks after pitching the last 2.1 innings in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Lowell took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first after Luccini's line drive went past redshirt sophomore Sam Parks and to the wall, resulting in an inside-the-park homerun.

Over the next five innings, Marot and junior Brendan Holland of UMass Lowell battled it out on the hill. The two starters allowed just four combined runners to get into scoring position until the top of the seventh when the Skyhawks leveled the score at 1-1.

After Dieter laced an opposite-field two-out double into right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Sengenberger stepped up to the plate and lined an RBI single into left field, tying the game up at one. Following the first-year catcher's run-scoring base knock in the seventh, Venezia came on in relief and stifled the Skyhawks' bats.

In a nail-biting moment, Brown delivered an infield single to shortstop, allowing junior Conor Kelly to sprint home from third and score the game-winning run.
