BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 1, 2024) – The Stonehill College baseball team was shutout in its series opener, 6-0, against Florida Atlantic University Friday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 2-3 overall, while the Owls improve to 5-4 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Trey Ciulla-Hall led the Skyhawks offense, going 2-for-4 at the dish, while senior shortstop Jack Marshall laced his first double of the season.
  • Junior Ryan Douglas (0-2) had a solid day on the mound despite picking up the loss, as he tallied two punch outs and peppered the strike zone with 70 percent of his pitches being of the strike category.
  • Junior Carter Brady launched his second homerun of the season for FAU.
  • Senior Andrew McKenna, junior John Schroeder, and freshman Emilio Gonzalez each registered an RBI on the night.
  • Senior CJ Williams (2-0) earned his second win after working 6.0 shutout innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FAU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first after the middle of the order went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI singles off the bats of McKenna and Gonzalez.

Stonehill's Douglas would settle in on the mound over the next five innings, following the two-run bottom of the first inning by the Owls. Douglas allowed no runs on four hits while peppering the strike zone, with 64 of his 91 total pitches on the night thrown for strikes.

At the bottom of the sixth, FAU would threaten to extend its lead by having a runner on third base with just one out in the frame. However, the Skyhawks infielders of redshirt junior Jack Thorbahn and Marshall came up clutch behind Douglas on the hill, turning an inning-ending, 3-6-1, double play to keep the deficit at two runs.

After two strikeouts from senior reliever Jordan Marot kicked off the bottom of the seventh inning, the Owls would work the counts and draw three straight free passes to load the bases. A fielding miscue in front of the plate with two outs resulted in a pair of runs to come around to score, extending the FAU lead to 4-0.

Following the infield error, an RBI single off the bat of Schroeder would increase the Owl's advantage to five runs heading into the eighth. Brady capped off the scoring with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning before junior Steven Andrews would seal the 6-0 win for FAU on the bump in the top of the ninth.
