Skyhawks Drop All Four At Laker Invitational

Erie, Pa. - The Stonehill volleyball team dropped all four of it contests during the two-day Laker Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst University over the weekend.

Playing one of the best teams Division II has to offer, the Skyhawks fell to California (Pa.), 3-0, in its opening match on Friday night by scores of 30-15, 30-15, 30-17. The Vulcans, got 12 kills and seven digs from sophomore Joanna Nist, while Skyhawk freshman Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) handed out eight assists in the loss. Stonehill also got 12 digs apiece from freshman Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H.).

The second match on Friday saw the Skyhawks win a game, but eventually fall, 3-1, to Saginaw Valley by scores of 30-14, 28-30, 30-18, 30-14. Thompson again played well, posting 10 kills and Wirth handed out 20 assists, but the Cardinals got 16 kills from Ashley Hendrick and 21 digs from junior Carmen Schacher.

In Saturday's first match, the Skyhawks saw the host Lakers extend their winning streak to eight games and improve to 11-1 overall with a 30-20, 30-26, 30-23 win.

Wirth continued her solid play thus far this season, dishing out 20 more assists, while sophomore Samantha Marcin (Somers, N.Y.) added 15 digs.

Stonehill's final contest, was a 30-16, 30-22, 30-18 defeat at the hands of Tiffin University.

The Skyhawks, now 0-6, return to the friendly confines of Merkert Gymnasium on Tuesday for its home opener versus Merrimack.
