4x400 Relay And Thornton Earn NE-10 Weekly Awards

Adrienne Thornton earned NE-10 Field Athlete of the Week following her first place finish in the weight throw at the URI Sorlien Invitational.

Record breaking day helps Thornton and 4x400 team capture awards.

Easton, Mass. (January 21, 2013) – Freshman Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass./John D. O'Bryant) and the 4x400 relay team were both earned Northeast-10 Conference weekly awards for women's track and field on Monday.

The 4x400 relay team earned women's Relay of the Week for the third time this season, while Thornton was named Field Rookie of the Week. Both the relay team and Thornton helped the Skyhawks place third at the URI Sorlien Invitational, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, on Saturday.

Maria Curit and the 4x400 relay team earned relay team of the week for its record-breaking performance at the URI Sorlien Invitational. Curit was also recognized in the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll.

Thornton was named NE-10 Field Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. On Saturday, Thornton recorded a first place finish with a school record 52-05.50 measurement in the weight throw. She won the event by almost three feet and topped her prior school record (47-06.25) by almost five feet. Thornton also placed eighth in the shot put, throwing for 35-02.50 feet.

The 4x400 relay team recorded a school record time of 3:59.02, beating the host Rhode Island squad by one second. Freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) ran the lead leg in 59.2, junior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) followed with a 60.7 second leg. Freshman Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y/Ward Melville) posted a 61.1 third leg time, and sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) finished it off with a 58.7 anchor leg. Both Curit and Polakowski were members of the team that posted the old record (4:02.91) at the NE-10 Championships last year.

This is the third relay honor for Gray, Polakowski, and Esernio, after previously earning the award on December 4, 2012 and December 10, 2012. For Curit, this is the second time she has earned recognition with the team, the other time being December 10.

Curit was also recognized as a NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll member. Along with earning first place with the 4x400 relay team, Curit posted second place in the 400-meter dash with a 59.02 time, just one tenth of a second behind the winner.

The women return to action on Friday, January 25 when they split between Northeastern's Joe Donahue Games and the BU Terrier Classic.
