Saint Michael’s 4-3 (3-3 Northeast-10)

EASTON, Mass.-- Freshman Daniella Granato (Concord, Mass.) posted wins in both singles and doubles play to lift Stonehill to a key 5-4 Northeast-10 Conference women’s tennis dual-match victory over Saint Michael’s Sunday afternoon at the Ames Sports Complex.

After sweeping the three doubles matches, the host Chieftains (5-0, 5-0 Northeast-10) saw the visiting Purple Knights (4-3, 3-3 Northeast-10) take four of the first five singles contests to even matters at 4-4, but Granato’s straight-set win at the number six singles spot enabled Stonehill to remain unbeaten on the season. Granato teamed with junior Ashley Todd (Weymouth, Mass.) for an 8-5 win at number two doubles, while senior Karen McAuley (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Jennifer Arcabascio (Salem, N.H.) were 8-6 winners at the number one doubles spot. The duo of senior Susan Noblin (Raynham, Mass.) and freshman Elise Clark (Spring Lake, N.J.) teamed up for an 8-1 victory at number three doubles for Stonehill, as junior Anna Walsh (Dennis, Mass.) provided the other singles triumph on the day for the Chieftains with a straight-set win at the number four spot.

Senior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn.), junior Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass.), sophomore Cara Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y.) each posted straight set singles wins on the day for Saint Michael’s, as Murphy is the only player to defeat Stonehill’s Arcabascio in singles play in her career, as both of Arcabascio’s setbacks in 33 singles matches have come to Murphy in both 2004 and 2005.

Both Stonehill and Saint Michael’s will square off with Saint Anselm in their next respective Northeast-10 dual-matches in Manchester, N.H., as the Chieftains meet the Hawks on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:00 p.m. while the Purple Knights square off with Saint Anselm on Thursday afternoon.
