No. 10 Chargers Rally Late To Beat No. 8 Skyhawks 10-9

Easton, Mass. - The eighth ranked Skyhawks let a second half lead slip away as No. 10 New Haven scored five of the game's final six goals to come back and upset Stonehill 10-9 at W.B. Mason Stadium on Wednesday night. 

Sophomore Ashley Ferrandiz broke a 9-9 tie at the 6:21 mark with her first goal of the game which proved to be the game winner.  The Skyhawks, on the other hand, managed one shot over the final six minutes. They also turned the ball over twice before the Chargers stalled over the final minutes seal the victory and snap Stonehill's 86 game NE-10 regular season win streak, a streak which began in 2000. 

Ferrandiz had a goal and an assist and older sister Mallory scored three times for New Haven while also picking up five ground balls.  Junior Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y.) had four goals while fellow classmate Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) had a goal an assist, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. 

Stonehill got on the board first, scoring twice, on goals by Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) and Gross, in the game's first nine minutes. 

The Chargers cut the lead in half with just under 17 minutes remaining, but two more scores by Gross gave the Skyhawks a 4-1 advantage with 10:45 left to play in the half.  New Haven would add one more goal before the half to make it a two goal game.

In the second, Ladino opened up the scoring with her 14th goal of the year, however two goals by Brigid Brady made it 5-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining. 

Stonehill looked ready to put the game out of reach as they scored three times over the next four minutes to grab an 8-4 lead and force the Chargers to call a timeout. 

New Haven responded and scored at the 13:33 mark to cut the deficit to 8-5. Mallory Ferrandiz then grabbed the ensuring draw control and sprinted to goal, scoring just ten seconds later to bring the Chargers within two. Her third goal of the game, at the 13:01 mark put New Haven within one. They tied it up just a minute later on a Brady goal. 

With the game tied at eight, Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass.) gave the Skyhawks back the lead at the 11:14 mark, however the Chargers scored the final two goals of the game for the 10-9 win. 

Junior Jackie Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y.) led Stonehill with six ground balls and six caused turnovers. Senior Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) was held to just one goal on six shots but did pick up four ground balls and collect three draw controls. 

The loss drops the Skyhawks to 8-3 and 8-1 in conference play while the Chargers improve to 10-3 and 6-1 in NE-10 play with the victory, their second straight over Stonehill. 

The Skyhawks return to action this weekend well they travel to play sixth ranked West Chester on Saturday and Millersville on Monday.
