Skyhawks Prepare For NE-10 Semifinals
Easton, Mass. - The Stonehill women's lacrosse team looks for their unprecedented tenth consecutive Northeast-10 Tournament title this weekend when they square off against Southern New Hampshire in the semifinals of the NE-10 tournament to be held at the University of New Haven on Saturday.
The second seeded Skyhawks take on the third seeded Penmen at 3:30 p.m. in search of their 11th straight trip to the NE-10 finals.
Stonehill comes into the game at 10-5 having lost their last regular season game, an 18-16 thriller to C.W. Post, the second ranked team in the country. After going up 5-1 the Skyhawks allowed 10 straight Pioneer goals to close the half. In the second Stonehill outscore C.W. Post 11-7 but it wasn't enough.
Southern New Hampshire comes into the game riding a three game win streak, including a 16-8 win over Franklin Pierce in the conference quarterfinals on Tuesday.
In their first meeting of the season it was the Skyhawks who struck first, scoring the first two goals and jumping out to 7-4 halftime lead. After intermission Stonehill took control, outscoring Southern New Hampshire 11-3 as senior goaltender Justine Ferland (Portsmouth, N.H.) stopped seven second half shots.
The Penmen are lead by all-conference performers Julie Kraus on defense and Elizabeth Parent and Emily Mongeau on offense. Parent leads the team in goals (39) and is tied for first in points (57), while Mongeau has scored 33 times on the season.
The Skyhawks at led by a quartet of All-Conference performers in defender Jackie Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y.), and the offense minded trio of Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.), Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) and Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y.). The three have combined for 148 goals and 64 assists while leading the team to a 9-1 conference mark this season.
