Top Ranked Panthers Take Down No. 9 Skyhawks

Garden City, N.Y. - Stonehill jumped out to a 1-0 lead but couldn't hold off the top ranked team in the country, Adelphi, as the ninth ranked Skyhawks dropped a 16-8 decision on Saturday afternoon to the Panthers. 

The loss dropped Stonehill to 8-2 on the season and snapped a six game winning streak. Senior Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) has three points to lead the team, with a goal and two assists. 

The Skyhawks got the on the scoreboard first as Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) scored at the 27:38 mark for the 1-0 advantage. 

Adelphi responded with three goals of their own over the next five minutes to grab a 3-1 lead. A Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) score off a pass from Kelly cut the lead to 3-2 with over 17 minutes remaining. 

Stonehill wouldn't get any closer, as the Panthers scored five unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes. Maloney's second goal, at 4:39 mark, ended the Adelphi run and the Skyhawks went into the half down 8-3. 

Michelle Salmon (East Islip, N.Y.) brought Stonehill within four early in the second half, but two goals by Michelle Ceraso put the game out of reach for the Skyhawks once again. 

Stonehill scored four more second half goals, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers walked away with the 18-6 victory. 

Maloney and Ladino both finished with two goals and Ladino added five ground balls and two draw controlls as well. Senior goalie Justine Ferland (Portsmouth, N.H.) made 10 stops in net in 60 minutes of action. 

The Skyhawks return to action on Wednesday when they play host to conference foe New Haven at 7:00 p.m.
