EASTON, Mass.-- Senior All-America Colby Confer’s (Madison, Conn.) goal with 5:15 remaining snapped a 9-9 tie as top-ranked Stonehill overcame a four-goal first half deficit to post an 11-10 non-league victory over second-ranked West Chester in a battle of Division II women’s lacrosse unbeatens Tuesday afternoon at Chieftain Stadium.

The host Chieftains (10-0) trailed 7-3 with 3:36 remaining in the opening half of action before closing to within a goal at 7-6 at the break, as markers by junior All-America Erin Acone (Bow, N.H.), sophomore Tracey Hoffman (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Kristin Darrell (West Islip, N.Y.) in the final 34 seconds of the half sparked the Stonehill comeback. The Chieftains scored six unanswered goals in all, including a pair from Hoffman and junior Jenny McGrath (Milton, Mass.) just 23 seconds apart early in the second half, to take a 9-7 lead with just over 22 minutes remaining, but the visiting Golden Rams (9-1) answered back with tallies by senior Kirstin McGoldrick (Havertown, Pa.) and junior Katelyn Martin (Downingtown, Pa.) to even matters at 9-9 with just over nine minutes remaining, setting up Confer’s heroics. Acone provided a key insurance tally with 1:09 to play to give Stonehill an 11-9 cushion, as McGoldrick’s free position shot with two seconds left accounted for the final score.

West Chester overcame an early 2-1 deficit to score five of the game’s next six goals in taking its 7-3 lead, as a pair of goals by senior Danielle Roy (Feasterville, Pa.) coupled with single tallies off the sticks of McGoldrick, Martin and senior Neilly Oliver (Jenkintown, Pa.) keyed the visitors’ run, setting up Stonehill’s three goal outburst in the final minute of the half.

Acone netted a hat trick and an assist to lead Stonehill with four points on the afternoon, while Darrell added a pair of goals and an assist for three points. Senior Colette Carpenter (Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and two assists in the triumph for the Chieftains, who also received a pair of goals from Hoffman as well as a goal and an assist from senior Courtney Duggan (Billerica, Mass.).

McGoldrick matched Acone with a hat trick and an assist in the setback for West Chester, while Martin added a hat trick of her own for the Golden Rams, who also received a goal and an assist from Oliver as well as two assists from junior Christa Somits (West Chester, Pa.). Senior Tara Wagner (Hatfield, Pa.) also tallied on the day for the visitors, who also received a single assist off the stick of senior Caitlin Pettit (Media, Pa.).

Junior Lauren Stone (Guilderland, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Stonehill with a 11-save effort, including seven stops alone on nine West Chester free position shots, while junior Chelsea Marshall (Media, Pa.) made seven stops in net for the Golden Rams as the Chieftains outshot West Chester by a slim 28-27 margin in claiming their 16th straight victory dating back to April 2004 and posted their second win in three all-time series meetings with the Golden Rams dating back to 2002.

Stonehill travels to New Haven, Conn. on Wednesday evening to take on Southern Connecticut in a Northeast-10 Conference match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while West Chester hosts Indiana (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match on Thursday afternoon that begins at 3:30 p.m.
