Stone Featured In Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" Column, Becomes Third Chieftain Student-Athlete To Appear In National Publication

May 10, 2005

There will be a familiar “face” in the upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated, as Stonehill College junior goalkeeper Lauren Stone will be one of seven individuals featured in the magazine’s “Faces In The Crowd” column in the May 16th issue with Randy Moss of the Oakland Raiders on the cover.

Stone, a native of Guilderland, N.Y. and a graduate of Guilderland High School, becomes the third Stonehill student-athlete to be featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces In The Crowd” in the last two years, as former four-time Chieftain women’s lacrosse All-America Katie Lambert ’03 appeared in the June 16, 2003 issue in recognition of her NCAA Division II career goal scoring record that helped lead Stonehill to the College’s first-ever national championship in an NCAA sponsored sport on May 11, 2003. Former Stonehill ice hockey standout Rob Pascale ‘04, the 2003-2004 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, was featured in the December 28, 2003 edition of the magazine for his accomplishments in setting the Chieftain career records for goals, assists and points in being named as the ECAC Northeast Player of the Week three times in a four-week span.

Stone was honored by Sports Illustrated after setting a school single-season record for most wins by a goalie with 17, as she has helped lead Head Coach Michael Daly’s Chieftains to 19-0 record to date and Stonehill’s fourth berth in the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championships in the last five seasons. Lauren leads all Division II goalies nationally with a 3.67 goals against average, and she currently ranks second in the country with a .609 saves percentage.

During the course of the 2005 season, Stone, the 2004 Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, was tabbed as the conference’s Goalkeeper of the Week nine times in 10 weeks, including this past week when she helped backstop Stonehill to its sixth straight Northeast-10 tournament title with wins over Assumption and Merrimack. Lauren has also been part of a Chieftain squad that carries a school-record 25-match winning streak into Saturday’s North Regional national semi-final against third-ranked Adelphi in West Chester, Pa.

Stone, Lambert and Pascale are the only three student-athletes in Stonehill history to be featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces In The Crowd” column.
