FINAL: STONEHILL 66, ASSUMPTION 64

EASTON, Mass.-- Freshman Megan Methven (Corning, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 20 points (including five three-pointers), while senior Alisha Collins (Port Chester, N.Y.) added 18 points as Stonehill held off a late charge to post a 66-64 Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball victory over Assumption Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium.

The host Skyhawks (19-7, 14-7 Northeast-10) overcame an early 11-point first half deficit (19-8) by using 12 unanswered points over a 3:36 span to take a 20-19 lead with 5:14 to play before intermission on a lay-in by sophomore Bethany Tighe (North Easton, Mass.). The two teams then traded the lead twice before the visiting Greyhounds (12-14, 9-12 Northeast-10) grabbed a 30-28 edge at the break, and after Stonehill had taken a three-point cushion early in the second half, Assumption used an 8-0 skein of its own over a three minute stretch to take a 38-33 advantage with 16:20 remaining on a lay-in by junior Charde Floyd (Worcester, Mass.). Stonehill responded with a 12-1 run of its own in less than three minutes to take a nine-point lead (52-43) with 10:46 to play and extended that margin to 10 points just over a minute later on a lay-in by senior Kim Morast (Bridgewater, Mass.), and the Skyhawks led by eight at 66-58 with 2:24 remaining before the Greyhounds made one last run, as Assumption scored six straight points to close its gap to two on a pair of free throws by senior Jess Paulson (North Providence, R.I.) with 55 seconds to play. Both teams missed a pair of jumpers, and the Greyhounds had a potential game-tying jumper rim out at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Senior Caitlin Kennedy (Baldwin, N.Y.) added eight points in the win for Stonehill, which also received seven points and six assists from Morast as well as six points from Tighe. Senior Tiffany Huggins (Stoughton, Mass.) chipped in with seven rebounds and six assists for the Skyhawks, who shot 41 percent from the field overall but converted 27 Greyhound turnovers into 25 points to sweep the regular season series.

Sophomore Bethany Plasski (Fall River, Mass.) netted 18 points in the setback for Assumption, which also received Floyd's ninth double-double effort of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Paulson dished out eight assists for the Greyhounds, who shot 55 percent from the field and held a 31-29 rebounding edge for the afternoon.

Stonehill closes out its Northeast-10 regular season slate on Tuesday evening when the Skyhawks head to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a league outing that tips-off at 5:30 p.m., while Assumption hosts Bentley in its Northeast-10 regular season finale on Tuesday evening in Worcester, Mass. at 5:30 p.m.
