SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Senior Brook Capello's (Hanover, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the seventh of the nightcap snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Stonehill to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader from host American International by scores of 7-3 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap in games played at Yellow Jackets Field.

The visiting Skyhawks (10-7-1, 3-2-1 Northeast-10) used late inning heroics in both contests to post their first-ever doubleheader sweep of the host Yellow Jackets (6-18, 3-3 Northeast-10), as Stonehill had split five previous twinbills with American International (the last coming in 2001) but had never swept a pair. After the hosts jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead in the opener, the visitors evened matters in the sixth on RBI singles by Capello and sophomore Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) that sandwiched a sacrifice fly by freshman Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.), and Stonehill plated four runs in the top of the seventh to claim the win in the first game, taking advantage of an error to plate two runs and adding two more on an RBI double by senior Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.) as well as Ippolito's second run-scoring single of the contest.

Sophomore Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) rapped out three hits in the opening game win for Stonehill, while Capello, Ippolito and freshman Meghan Sheehy (East Islip, N.Y.) each had two hits as part of a 10-hit attack in support of sophomore Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.), who fanned three in going the distance to improve to 6-2 on the season. Freshman Deanna Zanetti (Wilbraham, Mass.) had a pair of hits in the opening setback for American International, which received all of its run support courtesy of freshman Kellie Brown's (Gill, Mass.) three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Freshman Ashley Deegan (Madison, Conn.), the third Yellow Jacket pitcher of the game, suffered the setback to fall to 1-1 on the season.

American International again jumped out to a first inning lead in the nightcap, as the Yellow Jackets plated what would prove to be their lone run on a throwing error. Marrero's first collegiate home run in the top of the fifth evened matters for Stonehill, setting the stage for Capello's one out heroics in the seventh, as she plated sophomore Lauren Polselli (Portsmouth, R.I.) with the winning tally. Capello had two of the Skyhawks' five hits in the nightcap, as freshman Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) allowed one hit and struck out two in three innings of relief work on the mound for the visitors to improve to 4-2 on the season after sophomore Gina Vivona (Seaford, N.Y.) went the first four (allowing five hits and an unearned run) for Stonehill.

Sophomore Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) went 3-for-4 in the nightcap setback for American International, which also received two more hits off the bat of Brown. Sophomore Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Yellow Jackets in going the distance, as she struck out six along the way to fall to 2-6 on the season.

Stonehill travels to Manchester, N.H. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 twinbill that begins at 3:30 p.m., while American International heads to Rindge, N.H. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Franklin Pierce in a league doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m.
