EASTON, Mass.-- Sophomore Ashley Smith (Franklin, N.H.) and freshman Mary Bradford (Big Bear, Calif.) combined to allow eight hits and strike out 13 on the mound in leading Southern New Hampshire to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 2-1 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap in games played at Gartland Field.

The visiting Penmen (3-9, 2-0 Northeast-10) plated single runs in the second and third innings of the opener, tying the game in the second on an error and taking the lead for good in the third on an RBI groundout by junior Lindsey Yeomans (Durham, Conn.). The host Chieftains (1-12, 0-4 Northeast-10) had taken a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat on an RBI groundout by freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.), but Bradford shutout down Stonehill for the remainder of the contest to pick up the win for Southern New Hampshire, as she scattered five hits and struck out seven for her first collegiate victory. Senior Maggie Nugent (Hudson, N.H.) collected two of the visitors’ seven hits in the opener, as freshman Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck setback on the mound for the Chieftains, allowing an earned run while fanning one.

The Penmen broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of the nightcap when sophomore Tara Moriarty (Randolph, Mass.) doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Yeomans sacrifice fly, and Yeomans provided an insurance tally for the visitors in the seventh when she singled, advanced to third and was awarded home on catcher’s interference. Smith took care of the rest on the mound for Southern New Hampshire, as she allowed three hits and struck out six for her first win of the season. Freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) allowed just four hits and an earned run and struck out a pair in taking the setback on the mound for Stonehill.

Stonehill travels to Waltham, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon for a Northeast-10 doubleheader with rival Bentley that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Southern New Hampshire hosts Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Wednesday afternoon in Manchester, N.H. beginning at 3:30 p.m.
