EASTON, Mass.-- The Stonehill men’s tennis team opened its 2005 season on Thursday afternoon by dropping a 9-0 Northeast-10 Conference dual-match decision to 39th-ranked Assumption at the Ames Sports Complex.

Senior James Newman (Johannesburg, So. Africa), junior Michael Goldman (Worcester, Mass.), sophomores Dave Marshall (Newington, Conn.) and Matt Stopp (Altoona, Pa.) along with freshmen Rich Liberman (East Haddam, Conn.) and Antonio Recalde (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay), were all winners in singles play for the visiting Greyhounds (3-0, 1-0 Northeast-10), though Stopp was extended to three sets at the number two spot in the lineup by Chieftain junior Mike Pelaggi (Dedham, Mass.), who won the second set by a 7-5 margin.

The tandems of Goldman/Newman and Recalde/Marshall teamed up for a pair of 8-3 wins at the number one and two doubles spot for Assumption, while Stopp and Liberman posted an 8-2 triumph at the number three doubles spot for the Greyhounds, who are the top-ranked squad in the Northeast region and have now won 77 straight Northeast-10 dual-matches.

Stonehill (0-1, 0-1 Northeast-10) hosts American International in a Northeast-10 dual-match on Saturday afternoon at the Ames Sports Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Assumption heads to Cambridge, Mass. for the weekend to compete at the Harvard Invitational.
