Foxboro, Mass. - A breakaway goal by Chris Beaudoin with just five seconds left gave Western New England a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Skyhawks on Wednesday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.
The Golden Bears came out on the offensive in the first and it paid off just 2:12 in, as Joe Deptula took a pass and fired a slapshot from left point into the top right corner of the net for the one goal lead.
Stonehill put pressure on Western New England following the goal, and the Skyhawks evened the score up just three minutes later when Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) took a pass from James Killeen (Derry, N.H.) at the red line and dribbled the pass around three defenders before juking the goalie and putting home the puck with his backhand.
In the second period, Stonehill grabbed their first lead of the game on a one-timer by Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.) off a pass from Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass.).
The Skyhawks extended their lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later when Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass.) scored right in front of the net for his second goal in as many games.
However, the Golden Bears came storming back a minute and a half later on Kory Grahl wrister that went over the right shoulder of Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass.). Western New England then tied it up on a Roy Hansen shot that just slipped under the pads of Chapdelaine.
The Golden Bears weren't done as they added another goal from Phil Lamy to end the second period with a 4-3 lead despite being outshot in the period 18 to 13.
The Skyhawks came out aggressive in the final stanza, firing five shots in the first five minutes. On their sixth shot of the third, they tied it up at four as John Sommers (Manchester, Conn.) hit a slap shot from just inside the blue line.
Both teams had numerous chances the rest of the period, including a Roundy shot that just missed the net with under 15 seconds to go.
However, off the Roundy miss Mike Kaselouskas found a streaking Beaudoin who took the pass on the ride side of the blue line, got past the defense, made a move on Chapdelaine and back handed in the game winner with only five seconds on the clock.
Chapdelaine finished with 37 stops in net including a few two on ones, while his counterpart Justin Richards made 41 saves on the Skyhawks.
The loss ends Stonehill's win streak at five and drops their record to 5-8 on the year. The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday at 7:30 when they travel to take on Assumption.
