Falcons Use Three Goal Third Period To Ground Skyhawks

Fitchburg, Mass. - The Falcons of Fitchburg used a three unanswered goals in the final period  to blow open a close contest with Stonehill as the Skyhawks fell 6-3 on Tuesday evening 

Stonehill played the Falcons even for half of the first period, but a Skyhawk penalty at the 10:33 mark gave Fitchburg their first power play of the evening. 

The Falcons would convert with the extra man 30 seconds into power play for the 1-0 lead.  Fitchburg upped their lead to two less than two minutes later when Andrew Hutton put home his third goal of the season. 

Down 2-0 the Skyhawks pulled goaltender Mike Manna (Framingham, Mass.) and replaced him with freshman Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass.). Chapdelaine held the Falcons at bay for the remainder of the period, making 11 saves. 

Just 13 seconds into the second period the Skyhawks cut the lead in half on an unassisted goal by Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.). 

Stonehill wouldn't get any closer than one however, as Fitchburg upped their lead to 3-1 on another power play goal, this one at the 10:29 mark. 

The score would remain 3-1 until freshman Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass.) scored his second goal in as many games with Eric Scholl (Wilmington, Mass.) and Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) assisting on the play.  

Stonehill trailed by just a goal going into the final period, but three goals between the 6:28 mark and 14:01 mark gave Fitchburg an insurmountable 6-2 lead. 

Senior Frank Amato (West Springfield, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season with five and a half minutes remaining to end the scoring for the Skyhawks and give the Falcons the 6-3 victory. 

Manna had six saves in net before being pulled and Chapdelaine played the final 47 minutes, making 29 saves for Stonehill who drops to 0-4 on the season. 

The Skyhawks return to action next Tuesday when they play host to the Curry Colonels with game time set for 7 p.m.
