The Third Time Is The Charm For The Skyhawks

Boxscore

Foxboro, Mass. –
After losing in overtime two of the past three games the Skyhawks faced another extra session after tying the game midway through the final period. The third time proved to be the charm as freshman Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass.) scored the gamewinner with just 46 seconds left for Stonehill’s first win of the season.

In the first period both freshman goaltenders held strong with Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass.) denying all nine shot on goal while Nick Blanchette thwarted numerous Skyhawk scoring attempts and stopped 18 Stonehill shots in the period.

The second was a different story, as the Greyhounds got on the board less than a minute in on a Matt St. Pierre shot off of a rebound in front of the net.

Stonehill tied it up four minutes later when Frank Amato (West Springfield, Mass.) came around from behind the net and fired home a rebound for his second goal of the season.

Assumption took the lead for the second time on a slap shot from just inside the blue with just over 12 minutes remaining. However the Skyhawks responded again, this time Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) redirected an Eric Scholl (Wilmington, Mass.) slap shot with just 53 seconds left in the half to even up the score going into the third period.

In the third period, the Greyhounds scored on a one timer by Taylor Larson five minutes into the period. Not to be denied, Stonehill tied it up for a third time, this one on a wrister from freshman Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass.) from inside the blue line.

Neither team could score the rest of the period and the Skyhawks went to overtime for the third time in four games.

In the extra session, an early penalty against Assumption gave the Skyhawks a power play but they couldn’t score. However with jut 46 seconds remaining, Harris took the puck from just behind the net and poked it past Blanchette for the game winner.

Coach Garry Hebert saw this game as a turning point for the team “ It’s a long time coming and the fact is adversity has tested our character and revealed it. We earned that win tonight and I believe it will be the turning point to a multiple win second half.”

For Assumption Blanchette made an impressive 61 saves, while Chapdelaine had 27 for Stonehill.  Diozzi, Harris and Reissfelder all had a goal and an assist a piece in the contest.

The win improves the Skyhawks to 1-7 on the season and 1-1 in NE-10 play. Stonehill is now off until January 24, when they take on Worcester State.
