BRIDGEWATER, Mass.-- Senior Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.) stopped 22 of 23 shots as three different individuals netted goals to lead Stonehill to a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey victory over defending league champion Southern New Hampshire Wednesday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
All of the scoring took place in the middle stanza, as the host Skyhawks (2-7, 1-0 Northeast-10) netted all three of their markers in a 7:03 span of the second period after the visiting Penmen (5-3, 1-1 Northeast-10) had taken a 1-0 lead 7:23 into the frame on junior Joshua Douglas's (Mississauga, Ont.) goal. Junior Brian Davis (Foxboro, Mass.) evened matters for Stonehill at the 10:15 mark with a power play tally, and sophomore Billy Ninteau (Litchfield, N.H.) provided what proved to be the game-winner just 2:06 later with another Skyhawk power play marker. Junior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) closed out the scoring for the evening with 2:42 to play in the middle stanza, and the two teams played a scoreless third period.
Sophomore James Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) notched a pair of assists in the win for Stonehill, which also received single helpers off the sticks of junior John Durkin (Scituate, Mass.), sophomores Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) and Frank Cavaliere (Winthrop, Mass.) as well as freshman Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.). Seniors Chet Riley (Randolph, Mass.) and Ken Burlage (Dover, N.H.) assisted on Douglas's goal for Southern New Hampshire.
Gorman made 12 of his saves in the final 20 minutes of action alone in picking up the win in net for Stonehill, while sophomore Matt Courchesne (Bow, N.H.) made 20 stops in goal for Southern New Hampshire as each team had 23 shots on net for the contest.
Stonehill hosts Assumption in a non-league outing on Saturday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 7:40 p.m., while Southern New Hampshire heads to Pomfret, Conn. on Sunday evening to take on Nichols in an ECAC Northeast match-up that begins at 8:00 p.m.
