SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- Junior Jacob Kubrak's (New York, N.Y.) power play goal 8:12 into the second period held up as the game-winner and lifted Johnson & Wales to a 5-4 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Stonehill Saturday evening at the Rhode Island Sports Center.

The host Wildcats (6-2, 5-2 ECAC Northeast) jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 9:10 into the contest on a pair of power play goals off the sticks of juniors Shawn Roach (Grapevine, Tex.) and Ryan Jacobs (Derby, Vt.) that sandwiched a shorthanded marker by senior Zach Cobb (Dover, N.H.). Sophomore Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) got the visiting Skyhawks (1-7, 0-6 ECAC Northeast) on the board midway through the opening stanza, but junior Matt McGilvary's (Rochester, N.H.) power play goal 21 seconds into the middle period extended Johnson & Wales' lead back to three at 4-1. Freshman Chris Rogers (Westford, Mass.) netted his first collegiate tally on the power play just over two minutes later to slice Stonehill's deficit to 4-2, setting up Kubrak's game winner for the hosts, as power play tallies off the sticks of O'Brien and Rogers enabled the Skyhawks to close back to within one at 5-4 after 40 minutes of action, but neither team scored in the third period despite the visitors holding a 16-10 advantage in shots on goal.

Kubrak, Cobb, Jacobs and McGilvary each netted a goal and an assist in the win for Johnson & Wales, while O'Brien finished with three points on the night in the setback for Stonehill, which also received assists off the sticks of juniors Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) and John Durkin (Scituate, Mass.) as well as sophomore Billy Ninteau (Litchfield, N.H.). Sophomore Brian Noiles (Burlington, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Wildcats with a 38-save effort, while seniors Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) and Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.) combined for 18 stops in net for the Skyhawks as Stonehill outshot Johnson & Wales by a 42-23 margin for the contest.

Stonehill opens Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday evening when the Skyhawks host Southern New Hampshire in a league outing at the Bridgewater Ice Arena that begins at 7:40 p.m. Johnson & Wales will be idle until next Friday evening when the Wildcats travel to Oswego, N.Y. to take on SUNY-Oswego in a non-league contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
