WORCESTER, Mass.-- Junior Jim Trahon's (Needham, Mass.) goal with 3:53 remaining in regulation lifted Assumption to a 3-3 Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey tie with Stonehill Saturday evening at the Buffone Rink.
The two teams traded goals in each period of action in settling for the draw, as junior Mike Rust (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) staked the host Ice Dogs (4-16-1, 0-4-1 Northeast-10) to a 1-0 lead 15:08 into the opening period, but junior Chase Feole (Windham, N.H.) evened matters for the visiting Skyhawks (6-10-1, 2-0-1 Northeast-10) just 1:55 later for a 1-1 deadlock after one. Sophomore Brendan O'Brien's (Braintree, Mass.) power play marker 47 seconds into the middle stanza gave Stonehill a 2-1 lead, but Rust's second tally of the night at the 7:19 mark of the second period enabled Assumption to forge a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes of play. Sophomore Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) gave the Skyhawks the lead once again with 5:04 remaining in regulation, setting up Trahon's heroics for Assumption, and neither team scored in the five minute extra session of play.
Sophomore Frank Bova (Princeton, Mass.) collected a pair of assists in the tie for the Ice Dogs, which also received helpers off the sticks of junior John Routhier (Malden, Mass.) and freshmen Derek Whitney (Scituate, Mass.) and Atte Uola (Turku, Finland). Junior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Mass.) notched a pair of assists in the draw for Stonehill, which also received assists from O'Brien, junior Brian Davis (Foxboro, Mass.), sophomore James Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) and freshman Chris Rogers (Westford, Mass.).
Sophomore Casey McNally (Lunenburg, Mass.) made 37 saves in goal in the tie for Assumption, while senior Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) made 27 stops in net for Stonehill as the Skyhawks outshot the Ice Dogs by a 40-30 margin for the contest.
Stonehill hosts Framingham State in an ECAC Northeast outing on Tuesday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 7:10 p.m., while Assumption hosts Becker in a non-league match-up on Wednesday evening at the Buffone Rink at 7:30 p.m.
