MANCHESTER, N.H.-- Sophomore Chris O'Brien (Watertown, Mass.) netted a hat trick to lead second-seeded Saint Anselm to a 12-1 victory over third-seeded Stonehill in semi-final round play of the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference Ice Hockey Championships Wednesday evening at Sullivan Arena. The host Hawks (16-8-2) advance to the league title game to take on the winner of the other semi-final round match-up between top-seeded Southern New Hampshire and fourth-seeded Saint Michael's.
Saint Anselm scored four times in each period, netting the first 11 goals of the contest, including a shorthanded tally by O'Brien and a power play goal by sophomore Pat Forshner (Natick, Mass.) that gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead just 10:39 into the contest. Junior Josh Hechter (Winnipeg, Man.) added a pair of goals and two assists for four points in the win for the hosts, who also received a goal and two assists off the stick of freshman Tom Kerwin (Whitman, Mass.). In all, 16 of Saint Anselm's 18 dressed skaters notched at least one point on the evening just eight days after the Hawks won a one-goal decision (5-4) in the final regular season game on February 21st. Sophomore Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine), the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week, gave the visiting Skyhawks their lone tally with 8:55 to play on a feed from senior Brian Dudley (Waltham, Mass.).
Junior Jason Rafuse (Nepean, Ont.) and sophomore Bryan Wright (Reading, Mass.) combined for 17 saves in goal for Saint Anselm, while junior Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) and senior Billy Petrucci (East Bridgewater, Mass.) combined for 37 saves in net (25 for Green) in the setback for Stonehill, as the Hawks outshot the Skyhawks by a 49-18 margin for the contest.
Stonehill finishes the season at 14-10 and won 11 of its final 15 outings dating back to December 10th, as the Skyhawks tied the school single-season record for victories first set in 1989-90 and tied by the 2001-2002 squad.
