Men's Basketball Helps with Stonehouse Hill Clean Up Project

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2014) - Members of the Stonehill College men's basketball program recently joined former Dean of Student Services Richard Grant clean up the “Stonehill Caves”, known as the ‘Stonehouse Hill” on campus. Dean Grant has taken on cleaning up the caves as a personal project and is hoping to bring more awareness to the campus and our students of their existence and how they relate to our school’s history. Stonehouse Hill is a two hundred foot elevation at the Southeast corner of the campus straddling the border between Easton and Brockton. It has a long and dramatic history, one part of which is that it is the source of the name of Stonehill College. Right near the summit of the hill there is a boulder cave created by a glacier 15,000 years ago. The cave is called King Philip’s Cave or the “Stone House.” King Philip was a Wampanoag chieftain, who in the late 1600’s was the force behind King Philips War with the colonial people. The hill is a place of great natural beauty that has long been neglected. It is now being restored to its rightful state as a place of quiet reflection and appreciation of our history. We are bringing the hill back to life with volunteer labor from the Stonehill and local communities, in cooperation with the College. The men’s basketball team is one of these groups that have been very helpful in this process.
