Busy Week For Skyhawks Starts Wednesday

Easton, Mass. - Fresh off of a convincing 78-58 season-opening win over Queens College on Saturday, Stonehill (1-0) turns its attention to Northeast-10 newcomer, University of New Haven on Wednesday. That contest is one of four key in-region matchups the Purple and White will play during the next seven days.

Following their meeting with the Chargers, the Skyhawks head to New York to take part in the Lions' Classic hosted by Molloy College. The final game before the Thanksgiving break is a Northeast-10 matchup with UMass-Lowell, a team Stonehill split the season series with last year.

UNH, who finished last season at 11-16, opened the 2008-09 season with an 83-75 home loss to Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. They were paced by Cassius Chaney, who came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points in just 22 minutes. Kelvin Jackson, a 6-foot-6 junior forward added 18 points and eight rebounds. The Chargers shot 64 percent from the floor but were pounded on the glass (38-28) and the Lightning held a 25-9 advantage from the free throw line.

On Friday the Skyhawks face Adelphi, a team slated to join the Northeast-10 in the 2009-10 season. The Panthers are 1-1 thus far this season having lost their season opener to Post University but rebounded to knock off Dominican over the weekend. AU is led by senior Sky Khaleel and sophomore Richard Byrd. Khaleel has been in double figures in both games so far this season (12.5 ppg), while Byrd the 2007-08 East Coast Conference rookie of the year, is coming off of a 24-point, seven-rebound performance in the win over the Chargers on Sunday.

Molloy, meanwhile, has only played one game this season, a 72-67 win over Caldwell last Saturday. The Lions had four players in double figures in the win led by Girard Fitts' 23 points. Both Matt Wafula (18 points, 10 rebounds, four steals) and Brian Hutchinson (15 points, 12 rebounds) recorded double-doubles.

The River Hawks are under new leadership with first-year head coach Greg Herenda at the helm and have started the season 2-0. Prior to the meeting with Stonehill, UMass-Lowell will play two Northeast-10 Conference games against Franklin Pierce (away) and Merrimack (home). In the two games thus far, they have been paced by Victor Colon's 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds. In the win over St. Thomas Aquinas, Colon posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Stonehill used a balance attack led by sophomore Mike Kernan's (Medford, N.J.) 14 points in their win over the Knights. Senior Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) came off the bench to score 11 points to join Kernan as the only two players in double figures. Three other players - Kevin Wilkins (New Windsor, N.Y.), Matt Hall (Springfield, Mass.) and A.J. Rudowitz (Monroe, N.J.) all finished with nine points. Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J.) handed out 11 assists and made all three of his shots from the floor, helping the Skyhawks connect on 50 percent of their attempts (30-of-59).

In addition to excellent performers by several key returners, freshmen Patrick Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Andre Tongo (Acton, Mass.) had productive collegiate debuts. Lee had four points and seven rebounds while Tongo provided six points, two rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes.

All four games can be followed via the internet in some form. UNH provides video, audio and live stats free of charge, while live stats will be available for both games of the Lions' Classic. As always, Stonehill home games will have video, audio and live stats available.
