Skyhawks Drop 76-64 Decision To UMass-Lowell

Lowell, Mass. - The River Hawks used a 19-8 scoring run midway through the first half to turn a 11 point deficit into a 76-64 at the Costello Athletic Center on Wednesday night.

The Skyhawks jumped out to their early lead courtesy of the three point shot, including trifectas back-to-back possessions by Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) just five minutes into the game.

With Stonehill leading 30-29, the River Hawks Craig Heatherly dropped in his second three pointer of the half, giving UMass-Lowell the lead for the first time, sparking a 7-2 half-ending run.

The start of the second half saw the River Hawks open their lead to double digits via an 18-6 run capped by a three from Dashon Harper with 13:58 remaining. Stonehill got as close as 11 points at 68-57 on a pair of A.J. Rudowitz (Moore Township, N.J.) free throws, but Lowell answered with three quick points, bringing the bulge back to 14 at 71-57.

Surprisingly, both team made 24 field goals, but the River Hawks held an edge in three pointers (10 to 6) and free throws made (18 to 10). Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field and rebounds were close with Lowell holding a slight advantage (27 to 24).

Victor Colon took game high honors with 20 points, while Ali Kanaan, Jamael Lynch and Dashon Harper all had 12. For Stonehill, Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had 15 points, while all of Smith's 11 points came in the first half.

Now 3-4 overall, and 1-2 in Northeast-10 action, Stonehill returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Franklin Pierce in its 2007-08 home opener.
