EASTON, Mass.-- Senior Mary Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, while junior Heather Buda (East Kingston, N.H.) netted a goal and two assists to lead third-seeded Bentley to a 3-1 victory over second-seeded Stonehill in North Region National Quarterfinal round play of the 2006 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium.
The Falcons, who improve to 16-5 on the season, advance to the 2006 NCAA Division II national semi-finals to take on top-seeded UMass Lowell (18-4) next Thursday afternoon at the Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Fla. at 1:00 p.m.
Buda's unassisted tally 11:13 into the contest (her 10th of the season) staked Bentley to a 1-0 advantage, and Rogers took a Buda feed from the right side of the cage just 2:34 later to extend the Falcon lead to 2-0 at the break. Rogers knocked home a Buda rebound in the 49th minute for her 17th marker of the year to close out the visitors' scoring, and senior Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine) provided the lone goal of the match for the host Skyhawks, who end the season at 17-5, as she converted passes from freshman Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Freeman (White River Junction, Vt.) with just over 10 minutes remaining for her seventh tally of the year that accounted for the final score.
Freshman Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.) picked up her 16th win in goal for Bentley with six saves on the afternoon, while junior Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) made eight stops in the setback for Stonehill as the Falcons outshot the Skyhawks by a 12-11 margin while holding a 12-10 edge in penalty corners for the match.
Bentley, which avenged a 1-0 setback suffered to Stonehill on the same field in the 2005 NCAA North Region National Quarterfinal, will take on defending national champion UMass Lowell in the national semi-finals for the second time in three seasons next Thursday.
