LOWELL, Mass.-- Senior Courtney Hill (Newburyport, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist as fifth-ranked UMass Lowell overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to post a 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference field hockey victory over eighth-ranked Stonehill Wednesday evening at Cushing Field.
Hill evened matters for the host River Hawks (4-2, 3-1 Northeast-10) just 1:34 into the second half after the visiting Skyhawks (4-2, 3-2 Northeast-10) had grabbed a one-goal edge at the break on markers by sophomore Caitlin Gleason (New Boston, N.H.) and junior Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine). Senior Taylor Kloss (Georgetown, Mass.) gave UMass Lowell the lead for good in the 42nd minute on a Hill feed, as that tally stood up as the game-winner.
Hills first goal of the night, set up on an assist by junior Sara Hohenberger (Windham, N.H.), was sandwiched between both Stonehill markers, as senior Julie Michalos (Norwood, Mass.) set up Gleasons goal while Gleason later set up Latendresse's tally.
Junior Nicole Staiti (Barre, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Lowell with a six-save effort, while sophomore Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) suffered the setback in goal for Stonehill with three saves in 63-plus minutes of action before freshman Sara Piper (Hollis, N.H.) made one save in the final seven minutes of play. The Skyhawks outshot the River Hawks by a 15-9 margin for the match.
Stonehill travels to East Stroudsburg, Pa. on Sunday afternoon to take on seventh-ranked East Stroudsburg in a non-league match that begins at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Lowell travels to Springfield, Mass. on Friday afternoon to take on American International in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at 4:00 p.m.
