MANCHESTER, N.H.-- Sophomore quarterback Jon Kaloyanides (Cranston, R.I.) rushed for a pair of touchdowns and hooked up with fellow sophomore Chris Palmer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) on a 20-yard scoring strike to lead Stonehill to a 24-9 Northeast-10 Conference football victory over Saint Anselm Saturday afternoon in the inaugural "Battle For the Hawk" at Grappone Stadium.

The visiting Skyhawks (1-5, 1-4 Northeast-10) grabbed an early 7-0 edge on the first series of the contest, as sophomore Kyle Griffin (Walpole, Mass.) recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff that led to Kaloyanides's first scoring plunge from five yards out on third and goal. The host Hawks (0-6, 0-5 Northeast-10) got on the board with 9:13 to play in the half when senior Mike Garcarz (New Britain, Conn.) booted a 20-yard field goal following a Stonehill fumble, but the Skyhawks took a 14-3 advantage at the break, when Kaloyanides and Palmer hooked up for their fourth touchdown pass of the season to cap a nine-play, 61-yard drive with 4:03 remaining in the half that was set up on a 31-yard kickoff return by senior Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.).

Saint Anselm closed to within 14-9 with 2:42 to play in the third stanza when sophomore quarterback Geoff Stevens (Andover, Mass.) found senior Pat Turner (North Andover, Mass.) on an eight yard scoring strike, but Stonehill responded with a score on its next possession, as Kaloyanides capped a five-play, 40-yard drive with his second rushing touchdown of the day from one yard out that was set up by a 20-yard run by senior Kevin Avitabile (Bridgewater, Mass.) as well as a 45-yard kickoff return from junior J.J. Niamkey (Quincy, Mass.) for a 21-9 Skyhawk lead. Junior Sean Donahue (Plymouth, N.H.) closed out the scoring for the visitors midway through the fourth quarter by booting a career-long 41 yard field goal.

Avitabile rushed for a career-high 86 yards on 20 carries in the win for Stonehill, which rushed for 125 yards on the afternoon. Kaloyanides amassed 104 yards of total offense to go with his two touchdowns for the Skyhawks, including 93 yards through the air on a 14-of-21 effort, while Williams and Palmer combined for 10 receptions for 68 yards on the day. Sophomore Conor Cahill (Danvers, Mass.) rushed for 78 yards in the setback for Saint Anselm, as Stevens threw for 109 yards and a score while Turner hauled in 10 receptions for 75 yards.

Junior Chris Regan (Hanson, Mass.) paced Stonehill defensively with nine total tackles (seven solo) and a pair of pass break-ups, while senior Tony Pires (Taunton, Mass.) added a pair of sacks for the Skyhawks. Donahue averaged 41 yards on seven punts and placed three inside the 20-yard line in addition to his field goal for the visitors, who have now won two straight and three of four in the series between the schools dating back to 2003 and captured the bronze Hawk trophy award to the winner of the contest.

Sophomore Conor O'Brien (Scituate, Mass.) paced Saint Anselm defensively with 12 total tackles (seven solo) and a pair of sacks on the day, while sophomore Brian Tormollan (Waterville, Maine) added 11 total stops for the Hawks, who recorded five sacks as a team for the contest.

Stonehill hosts Bryant in a Northeast-10 match-up next Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium beginning at Noon, while Saint Anselm hosts Merrimack in a Northeast-10 contest next Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
